04-01-2023PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED FOR BURTREE GARDEN VILLAGE
The formal planning application for the Burtree Garden Village has been submitted to Darlington Borough Council by developer, Hellens Group and Homes England, the government’s housing accelerator.
Burtree Garden Village will see 2,000 new homes built during a 20-year period as well as up to 200,000 sq .m of employment space incorporating a landscape led development with a focus on the environment and sustainability. Phase one of the planning application, which has now been submitted, includes 750 homes, associated infrastructure, retail shops, community facilities and a public park.
Hellens Group successfully obtained Garden Communities status from the government for the Burtree site in July 2019 and a proposed mixed-use allocation was included within the Darlington Borough Council Local Plan, which was formally adopted in March 2022. Gavin Cordwell-Smith, chief executive of Hellens Group, said: “We are delighted to have reached the next milestone in the evolution of Burtree Garden Village, a journey which has already spanned several years.
“As well as forming a key part of the growth of Darlington, the garden village will afford residents space to live, work and relax, supporting economic growth in a sustainable community.
“The local council has been hugely supportive in helping us to reach this stage of what promises to be a significant development in the placemaking of Darlington. We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively throughout the planning process and beyond.”
Marie Kiddell, head of planning and enabling for Homes England in the north of England, said “the submission of the planning application comes after several years of hard work led by Homes England, Hellens Group and Darlington Council and we look forward to continuing to work with our partners progressing the Burtree project and supporting the delivery of much needed new homes in Darlington”.
